This may not have any bearing to the translation, but I wonder
what is the closest expression to "written on the stone". Can
anyone help me?

見当はずれのコメントかもしれませんが、相当昔(30年位前？）新聞記者出身の硬派のジ
ャーナリスト大森実が、「石に書く」と本を書いています。確か、ベトナム戦争の残虐
さと理不尽さを告発するものだった記憶があります。何とか賞も受賞しています。石に
書くの由来は忘れました、実際石に書いて記録するよなことがあったのか、深刻さ重さ
を意味しているのものかと----
思いついただけで、SUDさんの質問と関係ないのかもしれません。

I had an impression that this expression (written on the stone) is used when it
means "it is obvious", but I was not sure.
