Typically, capture systems will reduce the bit depth (from 12 bits to 8 bits, for
example) by choosing fewer levels, but levels that represent more visually equal
increments. Figure 3 demonstrates the idea by reducing the 5-bit (32-level) linear
data to 3-bit (8-level) data with roughly equal visual increments.
