今日珍しく特許翻訳を依頼されました。US PatentのClaims部分（「耳鼻
咽喉科の手術に用いる画像誘導システムに用いるバルーンカテーテ
ル」）なのですが、早速躓いてしまいました。

【請求項3】
A method according to claim 1 wherein the working device has a
distal end and wherein the location at which the sensor is
positioned is known relationship to the distal end of the
working device such that the location of the sensor detected by
the image guidance system will enable the operator to determine
the position of the distal end of the working device within an
ear, nose, throat or paranasal sinus of the subject.

の　the location at which the sensor is known relationship to
the distal end of the working device の部分ですが、どのような和
訳処理をしたらいいのか、困っています。

の書き誤りでしょうか？

isがinの間違だと思われます。

タイポじゃないのかというご意見が出ていますが、無理もありません。
原文を検索してみますと、問題の部分は

and wherein the location at which the sensor is positioned is in
known relationship to the distal end of the working device …

となっています。これなら英語として形になっています。
回答される方々に無駄な負担をかけますので、転記の際には正確を期し
ていただきたいものです。

さて、元のままでも言いたいことは見当がついていましたが、これでは
っきりしましたね。knownには「公知の、既知の」といった訳語がよくあ
てられます。「センサーの取り付け位置はworking device先端に対し公
知の関係にある」、つまり従来の機器と同様の位置に取り付けられてい
るということだと思います。

下記のように訂正しました。

の　the location at which the sensor is positioned in known
relationship to the distal end of the working device の部分です。

「センサーの位置取りが作業装置の遠位端との関係において既知である」
としてみたのですが、納得できません。is positioned in known
relationship to はこの後も頻出しますので、アドバイスいただけると大
変たすかります。
